New Year's Day Run and Open House - January 1st, NOON!  (posted 12/23/03)

For the New Year's Day Run/Walk we make an exception to the 10 am rule.   We'll assemble at noon (i.e., 12 o'clock high) for the run/walk to give everybody enough time to wake up.   There will be NO evening run/walk even though it's Thursday.

Also on New Year's Day, DCFR's own Tony and Kathy will once again treat the runners to an open house.   Come on over to 1953-C Calvert Street NW at two-ish (Kathy's term) for lots of food and camaraderie with members of DCFR and the gang from Fleet Feet.

Boxing Day Run and Walk - December 26th, 10am  (posted 12/23/03)

"Boxing Day, a day on which one is nice to one's lessers," a sardonic quote from one of the Brits in DCFR.   If you're one of the folks who has not decamped and you're not at work, come on down to 23rd and P.   We'll run, we'll walk, we'll dish, we'll eat.   And then some of us will join the hordes who are shopping for bargains.

DCFR Holiday Party is Still On! - December 7th, 5pm  (posted 12/06/03)

Based on the weather forecasts, we expect that this weekend's snow mess will be over by Sunday.   Accordingly, we see no reason to postpone the party at this time.   However, if the weather forecast changes, or if snow or sleet continues to fall into Sunday, we will take a second look at this decision.   Please check the website and your email on Sunday for any announcements pertaining to a last minute cancellation should conditions so warrant.   However, our intention at this time is that the party will be held as planned.   Happy Holidays!

Place: All Souls Episcopal Church, 2300 Cathedral Ave, NW

The grand tradition continues! Please join us for food, dancing, conversation, comradery and a bit to drink to celebrate the season and each other at this annual festive event.   As usual, the event is pot-luck, so we ask that you again test your culinary skills and create a special dish for you and about six others.   Drinks are welcome too; soda, juice, beer and wine are always needed.

  Race Director's Report - Veterans Day 10K  (posted 11/13/03)

The race directors were extremely pleased to see 22 of their teammates show up on a cold, blustery Sunday morning to run the Veterans Day 10K.   Kip Pierson, who was the first Front Runner to finish, and Chase Maggiano, who ran his first 10K, both placed third in their age groups.   This was also the first 10K for Kei Koizumi and the first race ever for Rich Lewis, who started the year as a walker.   In addition to Kip and Chase, Michael Glikes, John Bean, Mac Meccariello, Lennie Carter, Mark Rozanski, and Michael Mullen also placed in the top 10% of all runners.   Allen Haywood should be noted for running 3 miles with the group Saturday morning, running a 5K Saturday afternoon, and running the 10K Sunday morning.   Check out DCFR results on the Race Circuit page.

Race Director's Report - Marine Corps Marathon  (posted 11/01/03)

For the past 18 weeks, many DC Front Runners diligently trained for the Marine Corps Marathon.   At least 6 visitors along with 23 DC Front Runners completed the 28th running of the marathon on October 26th.   They trained in the rain and the heat (and of course never complaining).   The enthusiasm of the group was contagious.   Some of the runners were gunning for a Boston qualifying time, some wanted to do PRs, while others just wanted to finish and not be in last place.   Maybe everyone did not achieve his or her personal goal, but each runner should be very proud that he or she completed the marathon.   Check out DCFR results on the Race Circuit page.

A special acknowledgement should go to Boston qualifiers Mac Meccariello and Vince Micone.   Special thanks goes to Allen Haywood for hosting the post marathon party.   Alex Carrion arrived with his four marathon medals that he earned over the past year.   Also, thanks go to the many Front Runner cheerleaders and pacers that helped to motivate all of us.

Marine Corps Marathon Cheerleaders - October 26th, 9am  (posted 10/17/03)

DCFR needs a cheering squad so mark your calendars for October 26, 2003, to cheer on your friends and fellow Front Runners who will be running this year's 28th Marine Corp's Marathon.   The race begins at 8:30 am sharp and don't forget to set your clocks back the night before!   The DC Front Runners will be gathering in front of the Front Runner banner to support the runners at the 13 mile point on the North Side of the Lincoln Memorial.   We plan to meet at 9 am.   That way, you will get to see the elite runners pass.   After 9 am, it will become congested and may be difficult to get to the Lincoln Memorial.   Wear a DC Front Runner shirt and bring something to wave as the runners pass.   After our runners pass mile 13, go around the corner of the Lincoln to mile 18 and continue to cheer.   Bring cameras and share the photos with our webmaster.

  Race Circuit News...  (posted 08/30/03)

The 2002 - 2003 Race Circuit is completed!   The results have been tabulated and will be announced, and the trophies awarded, at the Anniversary Party on September 14th.   The 2003 - 2004 Race Circuit has been decided and will be posted on the Race Circuit page very soon.

Race Directors' Report from Annapolis...

Eddie Valentine led the DC Front Runners with an amazing 1:02:34 finish to place 4th in his division and 50th overall.   Besides the basic "I had to get up at 4:30 a.m. to run a hilly 10 mile race" whining from fellow Front Runners, everyone had a good time and everyone placed in the top 1/3.   18 Front Runners completed the race.   The race, always known as a challenging course that is scheduled on one of the hottest days of the year had some slight changes.   The course did not go through the naval academy but the change made the first four miles hillier.   A loop was added at mile 7 to take you slightly downhill then back up again to go back over the Severn River.   We were spared from the heat with mild temperatures with low humidity.   Mac Meccariello and Rodney Van Nostrand, along with Eddie, were given special Annapolis pins for placing in the top 200.   Visit our Race Results page to see all the DCFR results.

Race Updates...

Philadelphia Distance Run - Sunday, September 21 - Registration is open, fee is $40 ($45 after 9/18).
Army 10 Miler - Sunday, October 5 - Register Now! the race is almost full.
Georgetown Classic 10K - has been cancelled for 2003.

DCFR Members Appear in the Current WRR  (posted 07/02/03)

J Ford Huffman makes a cameo appearance in the July - August 2003 issue of Washington Running Report.   Pick up a copy and turn to page 22 for nice captioned picture of J Ford finishing the Sallie Mae 10K.   Also in the Sallie Mae spread (on page 20), Rembert Peiper gets a color picture, but no mention. He's wearing a Team DC shirt in the very first photo.   For those with really sharp vision, check out the photo to the right of Rembert.  On the right hand side, waaayyy in the background is Charlie Divan in this trademark blue bandana.   Scott Walsberger sneaks into this issue on page 43.  He's not mentioned in the caption, but that's him in the background of the lower, left-hand photo.

DCFR Turns Out For Capitol Hill Classic - May 18th  (posted 05/20/03)

As DCFR runners awoke to dark, rainy skies, a handful promptly returned to bed.   The other 26 of us braved the rain and completed the 24th Annual Capitol Hill Classic 10K.   Highlights of the race included Scott Walsberger finishing 17th overall, Blake Rushin finishing 2nd in her division, Scott Palmer injuring his leg at mile 1 but still finishing, and the Ben & Jerry's ice cream sandwiches at the end of the race (low turnout meant more for us!).  It has been said that we are an eating club with a running disorder.

"We really appreciated your help with the Unofficial Marathon last weekend, so we wanted to invite you to join us for an Unofficial Happy Hour this Wednesday.   Below is a message that we sent to registered race participants, but we want to invite everyone in the local running community, even if you did not run or volunteer last weekend.   Let's celebrate! See you Wednesday!"

UNOFFICIAL HAPPY HOUR ANNOUNCEMENT:
Many, many thanks to all of you for coming out to show your support for running a marathon in Washington, DC!   We were so happy to see so many runners prove what months and months of training can do, and we were overwhelmed by the positive responses by the dedicated volunteers; without them, this marathon could not have happened. All of you are awesome!

Come and celebrate with us! You are invited to an Unofficial DC Marathon Happy Hour on Wednesday, April 2nd from 6 - 9 p.m. at Garrett's in Georgetown, 3003 M Street.   There will be a live band and drink specials. Bring your pictures and stories!   Bring family and friends! We'd love to see you all there!

Visit picnet.net/runforamerica to see pictures, results, and read personal stories.

Unofficial DC Marathon is a Success (and so was our party!)  (posted 03/26/03)

The Unofficial DC Marathon was successfully held on Sunday, March 23rd with about 400 runners participating.   At least 2 DC Front Runners completed the run - Jay Vilar and Mac Meccariello.   DCFR volunteered at the Mile 19 fluid station as we had planned for the Official (but cancelled) version.   The club thanks all those who volunteered and made the DCFR station one of the best staffed.   Visit picnet.net/runforamerica to see pictures, results, and read personal stories.

Later the same day, the DCFR Marathon Recognition Party was held and was also a big success.   In addition to honoring all those who completed marathons in the last year, the club awarded medals to the 9 members that completed the the Gay Games Marathon (medals were not awarded at the Games).   Receiving their medals Sunday were Kurt Kehl, Lennie Carter, Cletus Durkin, Rob Bartola and Ken Buja.   Not present, but completing the marathon were John Peters, Brian Reagan, Vince Micone and Rembert Pieper.

Many thanks to Lennie and Charlie for hosting the party, thanks to all who came and brought food and drink, and thanks to Mother Nature for the beautiful weather.   Visit the Gallery page to see the party pictures.
