  Christmas Light Run - December 14th, 7pm  (posted 12/08/05)

Date:   Wednesday, December 14th, 2005
Time:   7pm
Place: Union Station (start and finish)

The Fourth Annual Christmas Light Run along the National Mall will be held December 14th at 7:00pm and will start and end at Union Station.   For those of you who have not done this before, a large group of us gather each year for an easy 4-5 mile trot through the city enjoying Christmas lights and singing carols.   Last year was our best year yet as this tradition continues to grow year after year.   New this year is our walking group, in addition to our two jogging pace groups.   You can register (it's free) for this great event at www.christmaslightrun.com.

Note: This is not a DCFR sponsored event, but our regular Tuesday evening run at Union Station on 12/13/05 will be cancelled so that our members can participate in this event.

The grand tradition continues! This year we are also sponsoring a Toy Drive. Please consider bringing a new, unwrapped toy and it will be donated to the USMC Toys for Tots program.

If you're unsure how to get to All Souls Episcopal Church, the church has posted directions at www.allsoulsdc.org/contact/directions.html.

A Thank You Message...  (posted 10/19/05)

A Message from Lennie Carter...

John Noran and I would like to thank the 22 volunteers who assisted with the Army Ten Miler water station.   I know it was not easy to get up at 5 a.m. on a Sunday morning to pour water and gatorade for 20,000 runners but everyone pitched in to make it a success.   It was rather awe inspiring to watch the sun rise with the Capital in the back and the Washington Monument in the front, with 20 soldiers and 22 Front Runners working side by side.   The volunteers included Adam H, Anne R, Charlie, Chase and his brother, Chris T, Doug, Felip, Hugh, Jeff H, Kevin L, Kurt, Marcel, Michael L, Paul K, Ralph W, Rafael, Robert F, Warren plus a friend of one of the Front Runners.   You all were terrific.

September 6th was the last time this year that the Tuesday run/walk met at 23rd & P Streets.   Starting on September 13th the Tuesday night run/walk meeting place changes to Union Station.   We meet in the Great Hall, towards the east end of Union Station, next to Thunder Grill.   Don't forget to bring some money as we like to share a meal downstairs after the run/walk.   The Tuesday night run/walk will switch back to 23rd & P Streets in the spring - April 11, 2006 to be specific!

button.gif  DCFR Board of Directors Vacancies  (posted 08/06/05)

Sandra Day O'Connor is not the only one making a retirement announcement this summer.   After several years (decades?) of service, Lennie and Charlie have announced that they will retire as Race Directors, and Adam F. has indicated that he seeks to pass the checkbook to a new Treasurer.   Unlike Chief Justice Rehnquist, Paul K. has already signaled his intention to leave the Coordinator's position this fall.   Elections will be held at the Anniversary Party (see above).   If you are looking to get involved, now is your chance.

If you are interested in these or any of the other elected or appointed positions, please contact Paul Kugelman at coordinator@dcfrontrunners.org to discuss further.   The DCFR depends on the time contributions of volunteers in order to sustain its current level of activities.   Don't assume that someone else will do it. WE NEED YOU!!!!!

  Membership Renewal  (posted 07/20/05)

The DCFR membership year has ended (5/31/05) and it's time for most members to renew their memberships.   You will be sent a renewal reminder if you need to renew this year.   New members who joined anytime in 2005 do not need to renew - your membership runs through May 2006.   There are 3 options for renewing membership:

  • Online Membership Registration using Signmeup.com (accepts new members too)
  • A Printable Membership Form - fill out this form online, print it out and mail it to us with a check.
  • Offline Renewal - receive a form by email or mail, complete and return with a check by mail.
If you do not renew by August 31, 2005, your membership will expire.   You may still renew after that date, but you will not be included in the annual Club Directory, and benefits such as the Weekly Email Update, and others, may be terminated until you renew.

To learn more about the different renewal options visit the "Becoming a DCFR Member" section of our main Membership page.   Or go directly to our new Membership - Join Online page if you'd like to learn about, and register your membership online.

  Race Circuit News...  (posted 07/31/05)

Race Directors' Report from the Rockville Rotary Twilight Runfest...

During the middle of the 8K race, lightning bolts shot from the sky, followed by a down pour.   The balloons at the finish line were removed and we were not sure where the finish was.   To add insult to injury, they closed the beer garden.   At the finish line, the announcer said to just go home!   Regardless, 26 Front Runners completed the 8K race.   Jonathan Horsford led the club with an impressive 30:55.   Four of the runners (Kip, Charlie, Lennie and Rich) ran 14 miles 10 hours later.

Check out the DCFR Race Results page for the complete results.

NY Times: Study Cautions Runners to Limit Their Water Intake  (posted 04/18/05)

The NY Times has published an article (4/14/05) about a study that shows that too much hydration is much more dangerous the too little.   It's a condition called Hyponatremia and it's more common than you'd think.   Click here to read the article (NY Times registration required).   Click here to download an MS Word version of the article.

Manna 5K (Circuit Race) and DCFR Brunch - March 26th   (posted 01/28/04)

On Saturday, March 26, Manna Community Development Corporation will sponsor its Seventh Annual 5K Home Run/Walk at the Fitzgerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park (16th & Colorado Ave, parking is plentiful).   Registration for the race is $25 and it comes with a long-sleeve T-shirt and a chance at raffle prizes.   Pre-race activities begin at 8:30am and the race starts at 9:30am.   This race is on the DCFR circuit.  Register at www.mannadc.org.

All proceeds to benefit Manna, a nonprofit organization that works toward neighborhood revitalization through affordable homeownership in Washington, DC.   A portion of the revenue raised from this year's event will go towards a rehabilitation project that will produce 30 two and three-bedroom condominiums for low and moderate-income families.   This development, called "Madeline Gardens," will be a significant improvement to the surrounding neighborhood and a catalyst for continued revitalization in the Trinidad neighborhood of Northeast DC.

DCFRers Henry Louie and Jim Gray live about a mile north of the finish line at 1630 Underwood Street, NW
(202-XXX-XXXX).   All DC Frontrunners that register for the Home Run are invited to brunch at Jim & Henry's after the run.   The food will be provided (do not bring anything).   If you want to run to Jim & Henry's from the Home Run, head north on 16th and turn left at Underwood and go one block to the dead end to Jim & Henry's.

If you would like to join us for this DCFR brunch, first, register for the Home Run and second, send an RSVP e-mail to Jim Gray at {removed} by March 23 so that Jim and Henry will know to expect you for brunch on the 26th.
